Biography

Dr Marco La Malfa undertook his medical education in Rome before relocating to Antwerp in Belgium where he completed his training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University Hospital of Antwerp. After completing his studies and achieving the status of Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr La Malfa worked at the University Hospital developing his interest in anaesthesia for day surgery and loco-regional anaesthesia.

In 2004, Dr La Malfa moved to the UK, working as Consultant Anaesthetist within the Princess Alexandra NHS Trust in Harlow. In October 2004 he joined the Department of Health initiative ‘GSup’ contract providing anaesthetics for NHS patients within the Nuffield hospitals in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and North Staffordshire.

At the end of the ‘Gsup’ contract he joined Interhealth Canada as Lead Anaesthetist, providing anaesthetics for five years at the Kidderminster NHS Treatment Centre. During that tenure Dr La Malfa carried out more than 6,000 anaesthetic procedures within orthopaedics, including minor and major procedures. Thereafter he joined UK-SH as Clincal Director of Anaesthetics covering five of the NHS Treatment Centres, focusing on enhanced recovery pathways to reduce hospital stay for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. In 2015, Dr La Malfa joined Practice Plus Group as Clinical Director of Anaesthetics and in 2016 became the Medical Director at the Practice Plus Group Hospital, Barlborough. Day case total hip, knee and shoulder replacements are now common practice in Barlborough, enhancing patient’s recovery and experience.
