The new prison in Wellingborough, which is due to open in autumn 2021, will house up to 1,680 male prisoners nearing the end of their sentence.

NHSE and NHSI (Midlands) have commissioned Practice Plus Group’s Health in Justice division to provide a fully integrated health care service, including GP and primary care, dentistry, optometry, podiatry and physiotherapy.

The contract, which also covers fully inclusive mental health services and an integrated substance misuse service, is for an initial seven years with the option of three 12-month extensions.

Service Director Luke Wells said:

Five Wells is an important new establishment and it brings the total number of English prisons supported by Practice Plus Group to 48.

“We believe our experience, ability to share best practice and award-winning service delivery gives confidence to commissioners and the best possible healthcare outcomes to our patients.”
