Glaucoma is a common condition in the eye where the optic nerve becomes damaged, causing a loss of the peripheral field of vision. This is commonly caused by an increase of intraocular pressure inside the eye (IOP).
As part of treatment, glaucoma patients are monitored on a regular basis, depending on the severity of the condition. This requires a scan of the optic nerve and a visual fields test.
There are different types of treatment depending on the type of glaucoma that you have. The options can be:
Eye drops: to reduce the pressure. This is the most common treatment.
Laser treatment: to decrease the amount of fluid in the eye, either by increasing the drainage of fluid out of the eye, or by reducing the amount of fluid that is made by the eye.
If you have any concerns about your vision, or a family history of glaucoma, visit an optometrist, they can refer if needed into our service for treatment.
Eye drops are used long term, until advised to stop by a doctor. Laser surgery for glaucoma commonly takes approximately 20 minutes.
The aim of treatment is to stop vision from deteriorating any further.
Treatment is very safe and risks are very small. You will have the opportunity to discuss any risks with your consultant prior to agreeing any treatment plan.
A pre-operative assessment is our opportunity to ensure that the procedure for which you have been referred is right for you. We’ll explain your treatment to you and makes sure that you are well enough to go ahead with it. It is also your opportunity to meet the team who will care for you and to ask any questions.
